Adventures in Writing
I took off from my day job to try and catch
up on my second book in the Nathan Beauchamp series. It was due out in December
2004 and I was pretty far behind on it. I always thought. “I work best under
pressure.” Boy did I have a lot to learn.
The first couple of days I really struggled. I
settled for about 1200 words a day. It is not easy to leave the Twenty-First
Century and move backwards in time to the Nineteenth Century, I told myself.
The third day I had muscle cramps from the tips
of my bony fingers, up my skinny right arm and all over my long neck. “You can
not concentrate when you are in pain.” I slipped to 1000 words a day.
The fourth day I had my quarterly doctor’s
appointment. “You really need to stop smoking, Joe, Here let me give you
something to help.”
On Day five and one hundred and forty dollars,
I sat at my pc sucking on a Nicotrol Inhaler and thinking how good a camel
filter would taste. I rewrote one paragraph four times, took me six hours to get
that much completed.
I then drove to the local convenience store and spent the
rest of the week with open packs of Camels and lighters strategically placed on
every clear surface of my U-shaped work area.
For the rest of the book I was securely glued to my
PC flowing out historical words of war, And wisdom. You might say that since
the afternoon of the fifth day I have been smoke’n….in more ways than one.
Joe’s Psalms:
One…..Never wait till the last minute to work on you
book.
Two…..If you smoke and drink coffee while you write, Don’t quit
either one till the book is done.
Hope my Adventures in Writing helps you plan your writing
better than I planned mine.
Fair Winds
Joe
